DREAM AWAY AT THE PANORAMIC VIEW
Off the Mozambique coast in the Indian Ocean, the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine Park is home to a group of islands with some of Africa's most beautiful beaches. Bazaruto Island is the main destination and offers a range of accommodations, from budget to luxury. But there are also uninhabited islands and others with only one or two hotels. Besides beautiful white sand beaches with coconut palms and sand dunes, these islands are also known for their excellent diving and snorkeling. There is a thriving coral reef system protected by the park and the turquoise waters are warm and clear.
The fantastic Maputo train station, designed by Gustav Eiffel, is the symbol of the city, but certainly not the only highlight of the metropolis! Stroll along shady boulevards or colorful markets and you will understand why Maputo is one of the most interesting African cities. Relax on the sandy beaches, taste the flavorful cuisine and enjoy Maputo's vibrant nightlife!
This calcareous coral reef located four kilometers off the coast can be reached via a long bridge from the mainland. Be varied by the diversity of architecture and go on an expedition to the two uninhabited islands of Goa and Sena. GORGEOUS!
There is one striking feature of the island that you absolutely cannot miss: Fort Sao Sebatian. The fort still has its original structure and is actually the oldest monument of its kind in the southern part of Africa, and its unique architecture makes for an immense and enchanting sight. This masterpiece took more than 50 years to build and when you walk along the perimeter of the majestic walls that guard it, you will understand why. Not far from the fort, you will find the ancient chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, which is also an awe-inspiring sight in itself and worth seeing while visiting Fort Sao Sebastian.
On the island itself, relaxing on the beach takes no effort at all and there are several local restaurants that serve delicious food, often included in the tourist package if you choose one and depending on the season or weather, you can also spot some sea turtles and stingrays close to the shoreline. For those traveling in the month of August, the unique opportunity arises to listen for humpback whales thriving in warm waters and getting a close-up on the way to Bazaruto National Park is a fairly common occurrence.
The sheer beauty of this seascape, along with the diversity of wildlife, has made Bazaruto a globally sought-after tourism destination. However, the historical overuse of natural resources, illegal fishing practices and poorly regulated tourism activities negatively impacted the area’s biodiversity and the livelihoods of those who live here. But over the last four years, the results of effective management have begun to crystallise and relationships with communities, tourism operators and government partners are helping to secure a more sustainable future for people and wildlife. The park’s management team has grown, infrastructure has improved, security has been enhanced and illegal activities have been curtailed. Bazaruto Archipelago has shown that its role is not only to safeguard biodiversity, but also help protect the wellbeing of its people
Ibo is one of the Quirimbas Islands in the Indian Ocean in the northern part of Mozambique. These islands belong to the Quirimbas National Park. Further offshore are Mayotte and Comoros. Ibo is about nine square kilometers in size. To the west is the village of Vila do Ibo, which is also called Stone Town. Some 3,000 people live here. The island makes its living from tourism, fishing and trading in home-forged silver. A special custom is that the children and female residents rub their faces with white ointment so they wear white masks. The island can be reached by boat but there is also a small airport.

Inhambane is one of the most beautiful villages in Mozambique. It is quietly located and offers a great mix of colonial architecture and Arab -, Indian - and African cultural influences. Inhambane also offers you access to the beautiful beaches Tofo and Barra where you can do great diving, snorkeling and, between October and April, spot whales, among other things.
This small village in the far southeast of Mozambique's coast can only be reached by 4-wheel-drive. Despite having few amenities, the place is immensely popular among divers and deep-sea fishermen. It may be quite an undertaking to get there, but once you're there, you imagine yourself in paradise and the offshore waters offer you an abundance of eccentric life. Have your camera ready to capture dolphins, whale sharks and whales on camera.
About five kilometers north of Ponta d'Ouro you will find the quiet and even more beautiful Ponta Malongane. Stroll romantically along the vast coastline here, picnic in the lush dunes and enjoy bizarre views with the green forest so close to the sea.
On the horizon of the Zimbabwean border southwest of Chimoio, the forested Chimanimani Mountains form stunning silhouettes. With scarce facilities and almost no moving public transportation, getting here is quite an experience. From Chikukwa, arrange a 4-wheel-drive and a guide to take you into the mountains, do some cool hikes or climb Binga, Mozambique's highest mountain, in two days.
Be sure not to travel to Mozambique during the rainy season. So December to April is not recommended. During that period it is clammy, hot and choked with mosquitoes, especially along the rivers. The rest of the year, the sun shines along the coast and you will enjoy lovely summer temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius on the beautifully white beaches.
The very best time to visit Mozambique is from May to November. The sun then shines abundantly. Moreover, these months are quieter than the period between Christmas and New Year, when vacationing South Africans flood Mozambique.
What is the best travel time for Ilha de Moçambique?
Ilha de Moçambique in the north, is hot and somewhat clammy year-round, but it is wise to avoid the island especially during the rainy season. A visit is more enjoyable and fun during the cooler winter months - the Dutch summer months of June through August.
What is the best travel time for Playa d'Oro and Maputo?
The southern beach resorts near Playa d'Oro fill up on traditional holidays like Christmas and Easter. So do the hotels in capital Maputo. Most notorious periods are December and January and late March early April.
Avoid southern Mozambique during these hectically busy weeks or book your room weeks, if not months, in advance. Outside of these holidays, the warm period between September and April is the best time to visit.
